About the artist
Sophie Colpa
Bio
Sophie Colpa is a self-taught artist and photographer from Hoogland, the Netherlands. Her approach to the world through the camera and through textile yields very different results — but is always recognisable through her own Scolpa style.
In both cases, the emphasis is on giving form to an inner world that runs deeper than mere observation. What she enjoys most is telling a story that connects, that is recognisable, and that makes the viewer smile. She always finds her authentic form by feel — because emotion lies at the heart of her imagery.
In her own creative and perceptive way, she shapes both landscapes and people through the lens of the camera or in embroidered layers of textile.
Artist statement
Scolpa-art and photography is the work of Sophie Colpa. In my work I let photography and textile influence each other, with every piece telling its own personal story.
My work is inspired by organic forms, experimenting and play. This becomes visible in the tangible quality of felt and embroidery in my sculptural textile pieces, as well as in the visual and abstracted series based on photographs I take during my walks.
Through the lens
I notice that I approach the world through the camera very differently than as an artist. I observe through my own unique lens and everything takes on a certain "Scolpa" aesthetic. By that I mean creative, perceptive and with feeling.
I love walking around an event and capturing the moments that really say something about the people or a company — because with my photographs I can make images and tell stories that connect, that are a little different, but always recognisable and authentic.
